L’astronaute de l’ESA Thomas Pesquet effectuera sa première sortie extravéhiculaire ce vendredi 13 janvier. Il sortira de la Station spatiale internationale à 13h05 CET (heure de Paris) en compagnie de l’astronaute de la NASA Shane Kimbrough afin de terminer la modernisation du système d’alimentation électrique de la Station.

Looking for food that could be harvested by astronauts far from Earth, researchers focused on spirulina, which has been harvested for food in South America and Africa for centuries. ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti ate the first food containing spirulina in space and now the knowledge is being applied to a pilot project in Congo as a food supplement.
Preparing for long missions far from Earth, astronauts will need to harvest their own food. ESA’s Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative team, or MELiSSA, is looking at creating a closed ecosystem that continuously recycles waste into food, oxygen and water.

Un projet de l’ESA appelé MELISSA étudie depuis plus de 25 ans comment il est possible de transformer un vaisseau spatial en un écosystème fermé reposant sur des bactéries, des algues, des plantes, des éléments chimique et des procédés naturels. Cette recherche à visée spatiale conduit souvent à des applications intéressantes sur terre, et la Belgique est concernée au premier chef.
