Five satellites spanning two decades have revealed variations in the timing and pace of glacial retreat in West Antarctica. Some glaciers’ thinning spreads up to three times faster than on neighbouring tributaries, and was offset by decades.

Grâce à des expériences financées par l’ESA à bord de la station spatiale internationale, ces odeurs pourraient bientôt appartenir au passé.

Electric propulsion has been around for a long time –1920s rocket pioneer Robert Goddard wrote about it. Perhaps it was an idea ahead of its time, because when I got into the space industry the thinking was that chemical thrusters were good enough, certainly for telecom missions. The platforms were small, working lifetimes were limited, power availability was constrained – and electronics didn’t last that long then either. All that started to change around the turn of the century, with a creeping up of mass, lifetime and power that made the various electric propulsion technologies more attractive.

Quelques deux mille Européens se sont réunis à l’occasion du débat citoyen de l’ESA organisé le 10 septembre dans le but échanger leurs idées sur l’avenir de l’Europe spatiale. Pendant ce débat, l’ESA a récolté les opinions et les idées afin qu’elles contribuent à la poursuite du développement d’une stratégie spatiale européenne pour le futur.

ESA’s CryoSat satellite has found that the Arctic has one of the lowest volumes of sea ice of any November, matching record lows in 2011 and 2012. Early winter growth of ice in the Arctic has been about 10% lower than usual.

The Sentinel-1 satellites have shown that the Millennium Tower skyscraper in the centre of San Francisco is sinking by a few centimetres a year. Studying the city is helping scientists to improve the monitoring of urban ground movements, particularly for subsidence hotspots in Europe.
